We’ve been out of the wing game for a while, so when Serniak suggested Uncle Buck’s BBQ, a BBQ place we’ve never been to before, I was totally on board. It also happens to be the first wing place we’ve gone to in Plymouth. Besides of the sign out front, the place doesn’t scream BBQ from the outside. It looks like a traditional bar. Inside has a slightly more BBQ joint feel to it. There was plenty of country music playing and it was pretty crowded when we arrived around 6:30. The place has a sit-down dining area and a decent-sized bar section. We opted for the bar side, which has a small, half square bar and plenty of bar height tables with seats. After taking our seats, the waitress was quick to take out order. While we waited, we played some free darts, which we are always fans of, and talked about Korn for some weird reason. In fact, Serniak decided to play some Korn on the Jukebox to prove a point about their distinct sound, which I thought would make for an interesting scene, but we were already moving away from country music at that point. Whenever there is a sharp contrast of musical style in a place, I’m concerned we will start getting glances, but luckily Korn played with no issues. They also offer a good variety of other specials. If I lived closer to Plymouth, I would probably partake in their Brisket sandwich night quite a bit.

When trying to figure out the price of wings on wing night at Uncle Buck’s, go with the sign on the outside that says 50 cents and not the one that says 45 cents. Besides, once you get inside, it is more apparent it is a 50 cent wing night. You can get the wings in orders of 5 or more and they are a pretty good sized wing. Maybe slightly above your average wing size.

Uncle Buck’s takes an interesting approach when it comes to wing flavors. You essentially have two options. You can either choose a combination of flavors from their Heat and Flavor column, or you could choose one of their specialties. I’m not sure if you’re able to mix the Specialty with anything, but they seemed unique enough that they weren’t worth messing with. I really like this approach because you get the be the wing artist here. And feel free to go crazy. For one of my flavors, I mixed one item from the heat column with two items from the flavor column. Taking that into consideration, Uncle Buck’s wing flavor options are pretty darn large.

The wings as a whole all came with plenty of sauce on them. I personally enjoy wings swimming in sauce, so I was a fan. They were also pretty well cooked. They had a good amount of crisp while still delivering on the meat. One part that was surprising and slightly disappointing was that these wings were not smoked or charred in any way as you would expect from a BBQ place. They were simply fried wings, which is still wuit alright with me. I started out with the Pub as that sounded closest to a traditional wing sauce. The Pub was described as a butter-base hot sauce. I will tell you, these were super buttery. I’m a sucker for lots of butter, but I almost felt like the butter overpowered the wing. It had a good amount of spice and flavor, but definitely expect a greasy, buttery experience. The Hot Parmesan Peppercorn had the right amount of strong spice along with a good bit of peppercorn, but I felt like it was lacking in the Parmesan department. The sauce was fine as it was, although I think the parmesan would have kicked it up a notch. I finally returned to Teriyaki. It’s one of my favorite flavors and it’s been quite a while since I ordered it. This Teriyaki had a great saltiness taste with a tasty sweetness on the backend. It is a thinner, sticky sauce while still being thick enough to hang onto the wing, which I think is important with a good teriyaki. Finally, my favorite of the bunch was the Mild Cajun Ranch. It was a creamy looking sauce, which instantly drew me in. On top of that, it had a delicious flavor of ranch and hot sauce mixed with the right amount of Cajun. These wings were tasty. I highly recommend this combination.

When I’m usually in Plymouth it’s for business. But this occasion I was there for the pleasure that only a little town like Plymouth can offer. For my counterpart and myself, this was the first time that we ventured to Plymouth for wings. I’m not really sure if any other place in Plymouth serves wings, I imagine there is, but I’m sure glad that we decided to see what Uncle Buck’s BBQ was about. I only knew that Buck served wings due to a sign that said that Wednesday is their wing night. Good enough for me.

Uncle Buck’s is a tale of two worlds. One world is the dining area which is perfect for keeping it a lean night. The other world is the bar area where the truest salt of the Earth resides. Regardless of which world you choose, it’s going to smell like sweet, luscious BBQ. The atmosphere in the bar area was downright funny. I wouldn’t say the folks there are a rowdy bunch, but I wouldn’t say they’re a bunch of choir boys and gals. They live somewhere in the middle. That’s a good place to live in. The bar area isn’t huge but there is a good amount of seating around the bar itself. No pool table, but there are darts if you’re into competing before eating. There are a few TVs if you’re looking to catch a game. I was actually hoping that Uncle Buck’s BBQ always played Uncle Buck on loop. That would have been a nice touch. Our server was very nice and helped explained their wing flavors. But I do feel a bit bullied by her due to her making fun of my Dolphin’s sweatshirt. But to be fair, I’d bully me too for wearing that.

There’s a wing challenge to be had at Uncle Bucks. It’s not a volume challenge but more of a eat these crazy hot wings and win. Not for me, for others, but definitely not for me.

The highlight of the evening, besides the wings, was that there was a guy who yelled out “Who wants to buy a ticket for a gun safe with guns in it?” That sealed this place with earning a 9 from me.

The wings at Uncle Bucks are a pretty decent size and for 50 cents a wing, it’s a deal that you just don’t see very often. There’s been larger wings on our journey but there also has been smaller that were more expensive. Get your regular order and you’ll be good. Also, you can order Buck’s wings in orders of 5. It’s always nice when that’s the case.

I almost went with a 9 here but I thought about it and I had to go with a perfect 10. The reason is they have 24 sauces, and you can combine any of their flavors to make anything your brain can conceive. I don’t feel like doing the math with how many flavors you can make, but it’s several.

    Wing Taste (x2): 7

Uncle Buck’s wings are pretty darn good. I was hoping they were going to be smoked, like the BBQ, but they weren’t. No matter, us Wingmen roll with the punches. I got my standard 20 and the first I had was the regular hot. These were excellent. A regular hot could be pretty ordinary and one that makes you think of tons of different hot wings you’ve had. Uncle Buck’s hot were flavorful and very saucy. In fact, all their wings were loaded with tons of sauce. There hot had good heat, but not so much that made them unenjoyable. For sure, get these. Next was the mild parmesan peppercorn. I originally wanted to get just parmesan peppercorn but our waitress convinced me to combine it with mild. I went with that suggestion and though they were good, they were very similar to the hot I already had. That was sort of the theme of all the wings I had at Uncle Bucks. They all kind of looked and ran together. The mild parm peppercorn had the peppercorn, which I enjoyed and the mild accented well. Solid taste. Moving on to the Western, which was lemon/pepper. I have no idea how lemon/pepper is associated with the West, but we’ll just go with it. I was expecting this to be a dry rub like other lemon/pepper wings I’ve had. Not in Plymouth. This lemon/pepper wing was saucy, which ended up being similar to the hot and mild peppercorn wings I had. I didn’t get to much lemon flavor in there. The wing sauce tasted fine, but I was looking for more of a lemon/pepper flavor to them. Finally, I had the Cajun horseradish. I’m a sucker for both of those flavors so it was a shoe-in that I would combine them. I’m glad I did because this was the best I had. The heat of the horseradish mixed with the spice of the Cajun made for a Legion of Doom like combo with two power guys on one team. A very strong combo that can stand the test of time.
