Garb’s Bar and Grill in Peckville is a place I’ve had my eye on for a while and we’ve finally made the time to check it out. It takes the place of the old AJ’s Club Soda, for those who remember that fine establishment. Garb’s has a very similar vibe and I was reminded of AJ’s when I walked in with it’s similar set-up, including a large square bar, bar height tables, sit-down tables, and a good selection of cocktails and craft beer. The place was mostly empty when we arrived around 5:30, but people were filtering in as time went on. Our service was quick and our waitress was always attentive. The wings also came out pretty fast, which is a benefit of having the place mostly ourselves at the start. The orders were slightly staggered, so being the gentlemen we are, some of us had to wait until the other wings arrived. In their defense, we did get 11 different wing varieties, so I can understand a bit of a lag there.

    Wing Size: 7

Normally priced at $15 for 10 wings, Garb’s offers their wing night on Wednesday, giving you a discount to a $1 per wing. They do allow minimum orders of 5 wings on their wing night, so if you’re a person who likes variety, you’re in luck. I definitely took advantage of this by ordering three different flavors across 15 wings. The wings are also a good size, although a bit chewier, which also factors into taste. I personally think they would benefit from frying. A bit longer for still some meaty wings with a good crisp and good size.

    Wing Flavors: 6

While Garb’s doesn’t offer one of the largest selection of wing sauces around, they still provide a pretty good variety. They have classics like Mild, Hot, Hot Honey, and Garlic Parmesan. They also have some more unique flavors like Thai Peanut, Smoky BBQ, and a House Recipe Dry Rub. And in case you’re wondering, the Bling is a Hot and Blue cheese mix.

I ordered two of my usuals – Hot and Teriyaki – and one I often avoid because I am never wowed by it, but the Smoky attribute of the Smoky BBQ definitely pulled me in. The Hot was a thinner, orange sauce with a traditional buffalo sauce flavor of vinegar, butter, and cayenne. You’ll get what you ordered with these ones. The Teriyaki was a brown, sticky, thin sauce, which is expected for Teriyaki, with some sesame seeds to appeal to your visual senses. This definitely had that salty quality that I crave in a good Teriyaki. Finally, the Smoky BBQ was a brown, slightly orange, sticky sauce. It was mostly a BBQ sauce, honestly, with your slight sweetness from the brown sugar that you find in other BBQ sauces and a good kick of spice. I didn’t get much smokiness from it, which was a driving force in why I chose it, so I was a bit let down.

Garb’s Bar and Grill is a relatively new wing joint in the area. Located in Peckville, where AJ’s Club Soda used to be, Garb’s brings relaxed dining with the opportunity to have a few beverages to the masses.

Inside, the place is immaculately clean. Nothing is out of order, and everything is so crisp and sharp-looking. You can tell that there is a ton of pride in making sure all aspects of the bar, tables, TVs, and everything are up to par. There is a really nice bar that is surrounded by a few tables. Then, there is this short wall with extra tables that gives you the feeling that you’re in an enclosed porch. That’s where we sat.

TVs have all types of sports on, so you can easily see this is a solid place to watch a sporting match, if you’re into that kind of thing. If you’re down for a game of billiards, they have a sharp pool table.

Our server was diligent and thorough. She explained what some of the ambiguous wing flavor names were all about and made sure we never got thirsty.

The atmosphere was a stressless, easy-going one.

The wings at Garb’s are real big. Get your standard order, but understand that you’re going to be taking a breath about 2/3 of the way through.

A dollar a wing is what they offer on their wing night, which is Wednesdays.

You can also order in orders of 5s, which makes life so much easier when it comes to getting multiple sauces.

    Wing Flavors: 7

13 flavors are on the menu at Garb’s. They have the standard ones that all places need to have. But, they also have a couple of off-the-beaten-path type flavors, such as Thai peanut and a House recipe dry rub. That was cool to see because usually a House flavor is some form of a place’s hot infused with something. At Garb’s, they elected to use the word “House” with a dry rub. I like the uniqueness with that.

Real solid wings at Garb’s. The crispiness was fine, but due to the size of the wings, elite crispiness is tough to achieve.

Starting off, we have their hot. Flavorful sauce with enough heat to keep you locked in on them. One thing about this sauce and the others is that they need to add a little bit more sauce to them. Again, the size of the wings is good, but that size requires more sauce to cover them. It’s science.

Anyway, on to the sweet heat. The heat was there, and then that sweetness, probably honey, did its job to twang up the flavor.

Next, we had to get the House Dry Rub. These were excellent, and they were well-coated. The flavor was a savory, sweet, and salty type of rub. I think these may have been my favorite. When a dry rub hits, it stays with you. That’s been my experience.

Finally, we went with the Bling sauce. First off, cool name. What the Bling sauce is all about is their mild mixed with blue cheese. A sauce you can get at other places, but when you label it with Bling, I am instantly interested and will order it. It was what you want out of a mild and blue cheese blend. The flavor and slight heat from the mild with the cooling and creaminess of the blue cheese is what you need.
