McAlpine St Pub & Pizza can be a tricky place to find on the internet. It’s easy enough to find their page on Facebook, but I’m still not 100% sure what their address is. The Facebook page says it’s in Duryea with a zip code of 18642. Googling the name of the place doesn’t give you the option to locate on the map. Google maps gives you a list of other places when you type in the name of the place, but not actually McAlpine St Pub & Pizza. Typing the address on their Facebook into Google returns a result in Avoca at zip code 18641. I’m so confused! I think I used Apple maps and we didn’t have an issue getting to the place by typing in their address. Anyway, once you find the place and get inside, you’ll be treated an overall pleasant experience. There’s a long bar with some sit down tables across from it. There’s also a decent-sized back section with more tables for dining. Either the place is well-maintained or it is relatively new as it was pretty up-to-date and clean. Our waitress was very friendly, personable, and helpful. I think she was the only one working the bar and restaurant section and she did a great job making sure everyone was taken care of properly. McAlpine St Pub was pretty hopping and lively for a Thursday night. It seems to be a fun place where you can hang out and relax with friends or stop in to enjoy a good meal.

We tend to only go to places that have a wing night. McAlpine St Pub & Pizza does not have a wing night, but we made an exception for it after discovering that an order of a dozen wings costs $6.95. That makes it less than 60 cents a wing, which is better than some other places’ wing night price. Now, that price will change depending on the volume you order. Your best bet is to get either a dozen or two dozen wings. The option for 6 wings or 20 wings has a higher per wing price point. The wings themselves are pretty decently sized with a very crispy skin and meaty enough interior. I liked that McAlpine St allowed you to get two different sauces in an order of a dozen so that way you can get more variety.

McAlpine St. Pub & Pizza provides a decent mix of options for their wing sauces ranging from your classics to   non-traditional flavors. I like that they have some options that aren’t as common in many places such as the Jack Daniels sauces and Cajun Bleu Cheese. I also enjoy that they created their own Pub Sauce, which is a combination of hot, honey, garlic and BBQ.

I ordered a good variety of sauces on this visit, which included Hot, Jack Daniels, Pub Sauce, and Garlic Parmesan. As a whole, I wish all the wings were more covered with sauce. The sauce is poured over the wings as opposed to being tossed together for a good coating. For many of my wings, I was trying to scrape up sauce from the bottom of my basket to really get a feel for the flavor. The Hot sauce was a pretty spicy wing with a strong pepper flavor of cayenne and hits of peppercorn, which made it stand out from your traditional hot wing sauce. I enjoyed the flavor, but not sure I could handle very many of them. I’m a sucker for Jack Daniels sauce and it’s pretty rare to see for wings, so I was definitely on board to try it. The sauce is a slightly sticky, slightly runny translucent brown sauce mixed with minced garlic and Jack Daniels. It is definitely on the sweeter end with a kick of the Jack Daniels. Like I said, I am a sucker for Jack Daniels sauce and this wing was no exception. The Garlic Parmesan was a mix of Butter, minced garlic and plenty of parmesan cheese. When I was able to get a wing covered in the mix, I was happy enough. Most of the wings were lacking the seasoning though and I was wishing for some sort of sauce to meld the flavors together better. In fact, I ended up dipping many of these wings in the hot sauce. Finally, I had the Pub sauce, which ended up being my favorite of the bunch. Usually, I’m not crazy about hot honey or a BBQ sauce, but the way the hot, honey, BBQ, and garlic were mixed together made it a truly delicious wing.

From speaking to one of my many man contacts that I have in the world of Avoca, McAlpine St. Pub and Pizza has only been around for less than a year. I’m not surprised by this because as soon as soon as I walked into the place, it felt like a place that hasn’t been around for very long. The place was very clean, non-smoking and the walls looked real new. Not saying that in 50 years that the place won’t be clean and have new looking walls, it just gave off the vibe of being newer addition in the greater NEPA Wing Society(this should be a thing). There’s a larger seating area in the back but we chose to sit up in the bar area at a booth. There are a about 4-6 seating areas that surround the peninsula that is the bar. Yes, I just flexed my geography brain what of it? Chalk McAlpine St. up to being another bar/restaurant that had Jeopardy on while we were there. Always nice to break a mental sweat before dinner. There was a decent crowd there and they were having a real good time. It was one of those situations where one guy was holding court over everyone else where everything he said was hilarious to the people he was talking to and the people who were down the street heard it as well. Real salt of the Earth folks. I always enjoy going to a place where other people in the joint are having a swell time. Just a welcoming feeling. Our server, who was also the bartender, was very nice, explained their wing flavors and setup to us. She also was pretty darn funny in explaining that there menu has 2 wing flavors that are the same sauce but that their “brilliant editor” never changed it. Didn’t make a big deal about it, laughed about it and it was good. People can learn a lot from her. I think the owner came up to us and said hello and that was a nice thing to do. That or it wasn’t the owner and it was just a random guy who was in a real good mood and wanted to say hey.

Nice sized wings is what you will get at McAlpine St. We’ve certainly have had larger ones but we have smaller ones as well. I’d say in regards to size, they were slightly above average. The price was $6.95 for a dozen and it wasn’t even their wing night. That’s right kids, we went to a place that doesn’t have a wing night. Just another example of how the Nepa Wingmen are expanding our minds. Also, with your order, you can split them in half and get multiple flavors, which is nice.

15 flavors is what you’ll find at McAlpine St. I feel like to earn a 6 or a 7 from me, a place needs to have around 12ish but to really get a 7 you need to have some unique wing flavors as well. This place has some. They have most of the standard flavors you always see but they also had Jack Daniels, Cajun Blue Cheese, Cajun dry rub, Old Bay, which is becoming a staple of flavors you typically see, Kickin bourbon and Thai chili. They also have a pub sauce and an sauce called Octagon sauce. This is where we needed help from our server and where she dropped the funny line about the editor of the menu putting the same sauce on there twice though it’s the same sauce. Pub and Octagon sauce are both mild, honey bbq garlic.

Very solid showing from McAlpine St. Pub and Pizza. Maybe they should start calling the place McAlpine St. Pub and Pizza and also Wings because the wings are good as well. I got a healthy 24 wings on this evening. Naturally, since it’s a new place, I got their regular hot. They were good. They were very peppery. Like I feel that peppers are a big part of them. Not to hot but they had an interesting flavor. Next, I had the kickin bourbon. A wonderful deep purpleish colored sauce that had certainly had a fair amount of kickin in there. You had the bbq from the bourbon part of the sauce but the kickin portion brought a quality heat that made a fierce duo. Thirdly, I had the cajun blue cheese and these had a fantastic yellowish glow to them. Whenever I see that type of color on a wing, I just know it’s going to be good and I was right. They were very good. The blue cheese brings a nice cooling, smooth flavor but then party which is the cajun part of the sauce comes in and everyone just has a good time. That’s what this sauce was doing. It was partying. The cajun part was jam-packed with flavor that I wish they just had it as a stand alone sauce. Lastly, I had and made sure I ordered the octagon sauce and not the pub sauce. Wouldn’t be caught dead with the pub sauce so of course I went with the octagon sauce. Not sure if the creator of the octagon sauce is a big UFC fan or is just a person who’s really into shapes. It’s gotta be one or the other. Anyways, the sauce of mild, bbq, honey and garlic was a solid blend where none of the individual flavors tried taking over. They were all respectful and let everyone get enough screen time kind of like a certain movie that broke pretty much every box office record there is. If you guessed Fantastic 4, nice work.
