Jason’s Pub & Eatery, located within the Plot Section of Scranton, can be a bit difficult to find. Previously known as The Donkey, the path to Jason’s is a winding and crisscrossing set of roads, so be sure to carefully follow the signs that guide the path or punch the location into your GPS. Like a prize in the center of a labyrinth, Jason’s is a real treasure. You first enter a room with a large, rectangular bar with many seats and tables around it. They also have a smaller, sit-down area in a back room if you prefer a dining experience. We got to Jason’s later in the evening and the place was still packed. The bartenders/servers were very friendly and acted as though they knew everyone there. With Jason’s being so full, the wings did take some time to come out. Also, the place is cash only, so have money ready or expect to use the ATM on site. Take out extra though, because Jason’s has a great craft beer selection that is difficult to turn down.
Normally priced at $7.50 for an order of 10 wings, Jason’s offers 40 cent wings on Monday for their wing night. If you’re a fan of especially crispy wings, than this is the place for you. I think the crispiness is due to extra time in the fryer, which results in a very small wing. I would suggest ordering at least five more wings than you normally would if you want to leave full.
Jason’s does a good job of mixing things up a bit when it comes to wing flavors. In addition to classic flavors like Mild and BBQ, they serve some non-traditional sauces like Porketta, Honey Wasabi, and Pineapple Sesame Teriyaki. In past visits, Jason’s featured special sauces on wing night. Unfortunately, this was not the case for our most recent trip. To be on the safe side, it doesn’t hurt to ask your server if there are any featured flavors not shown on the menu.
There hasn’t been a sauce at Jason’s that I didn’t like. They have truly perfected their Porketta wing. Most dry-rub Porketta seasonings I have tried in the past have either been too salty or lacking flavor. Jason’s finds the right balance of spices to provide a wallop of flavor without overloading the senses. The Hot has a great taste with a lot of spice. In fact, be careful ordering this sauce if you don’t like your wings too spicy. The Teriyaki is a slightly sticky and salty sauce with sesame seeds sprinkled on top. I enjoyed these wings, but I could have done with a bit more sauce. Finally, the Hot Garlic Parmesan is a fantastic wing that you must try when you go to Jason’s. The sauce is a mix of the regular Hot sauce and garlic. Then, which I think is a really nice touch, they shave Parmesan cheese on top. It is easily my favorite wing at Jason’s Pub & Eatery.
If you’re a fan of fun and like to be in a good mood, then Jason’s is the place for you. If you’re into being in a bad mood and want to bring others down, try jail. Buried in the “plot” section of Scranton is Jason’s. It has the look of your typical corner, townie bar and even when you get inside, the layout will make you feel that as well. But that’s where the usualness feeling ends especially if you’re a Green Bay Packers fan. Obviously, in the heart of NEPA a Packers bar would rise. Don’t worry, if you’re not a Cheesehead, you’ll make it out alive. Not only is Monday their wing night and you can view Monday night football but don’t forget, Raw is War and Monday Night Raw will be pumped in. Our server, was a young lad who had a lot of vigor and really made it a point to make us comfortable. His diligence to us was noticed and will not be soon forgotten. In fact, Jason’s entire atmosphere breeds good times, which makes their environment Perfect.
They aren’t the largest wings in the area but for 40 cents a wing, which is way under the area average for wing night prices, you can’t feel that disgruntled. Read this, understand this and order and extra order to fulfill your craving. That’s what I did and I’ve been doing great.
Much variety, much uniqueness is what you get at Jason’s they have over 15 sauces that also include dry rubs. You need to also ask about sauces that may not be on the menu. Trust me it’s worth it. They have the usual suspects in terms of flavors but then get creative with flavors such as spicy orange chili, a garlic ranch dry rub and their signature J-Sauce.
The first one I got was the spicy orange chili. Exactly how this flavor reads is what you get. The spiciness from the chili to the tartness of the orange flavoring, will really keep your taste buds in a frenzy. The tangy mustard bbq, a flavor that I’ve been ordering consistently whenever I see it, was everything I wanted. It has the sweetness that you’d expect form the bbq sauce but then it gets the “hot tag” from the mustard that really transforms it into solid team. The garlic parmesan, which gets a “run in” from the regular hot sauce that Jason’s dishes out is solid. It’s a good consistent flavor, that always will hit. Next, I had the J-Sauce and this flavor reminds me a speedie sauce that you’d get on some chicken hoagies. It’s not a overpowering flavor, but the seasonings involved make it pretty savory. Finally, the garlic ranch, which is a dry rub is a great representation of the flavor. I think it’s just garlic and ranch seasonings, but the amount they put on is great and will have you stylin and profiling and don’t be surprised if you let out a big WOOOO!!
