Jason’s, previously known as the Donkey, is a very difficult place to find. It’s in the Plot section of Scranton, but you’ll have a heck of a time locating it if you’re not following the signs for the place to a T. Inside, the place is pretty nice, though. There are two sections, really. One part is mainly a pretty big bar with some minor seating around it. In the back is more of a dining room. I would suggest hanging out in the front, especially at the bar because you will get good service there. Our drinks and food were pretty well taken of. The waitresses and bartender were all very nice and friendly as well. They constantly check on you. The place as a whole is clean and modern looking. One thing that miffs me about places is when they don’t take credit/debit cards and only cash. I mean, they do provide an ATM, but I’m just not a fan of that strategy.
These wings were a bit small. I had no problem putting down 20, which I do struggle with at some places. $0.40 a piece is not a bad price at all, but I was hoping for a slightly larger wing.
They don’t have too many flavors here, but they do have an interesting selection. Unfortunately, they were out of the Orange Chili, which I would have loved to try. They did have two special flavors not on the menu, though; they were the Garlic Dill Ranch and the Teriyaki. I like when places try out new wing flavors and offer them as a special.
We got a pretty good mix at Jason’s, which always makes me happy. The plain hot were decent. You can taste the chili pepper added to the wings to make them spicy. They had a great flavor and spice for a Hot. J-sauce is hard to describe. It’s more like a dry rub than a sauce, but the flavor had a nice, black peppery taste to it. Porketta were awesome. This is another dry rub that really captures the taste of porketta. They are highly recommended. The Hot Garlic Parm used the Hot sauce as a base with some Parmesan cheese added on top. The cheese did a good job of mellowing out the hot sauce a bit, but the garlic taste was not very pronounced. General T’so wings were much sweeter than I expected. If you’re into sweet wings, try them out, but they were not my cup of tea. I really dug the Teriyaki wings. There was not a lot of sauce on them. It was as though the sauce was baked into the wing, but it had a strong flavor. The saltiness and taste were perfect for me. Finally, the Garlic Dill Ranch was a flavor I just had to try. I was surprised to see it was a bit dryer of a sauce, sort of like butter garlic. The dill flavor did come through, which gave it a nice sourness taste. It could have used a bit more of a ranch flavor, in my opinion.
Jason’s, formerly called The Donkey, is located in the “plot section” of Scranton. It can be difficult to find if you have never been there but they do a nice job of putting directions on powerline poles to help you. The atmosphere there is a positive one that you can sense immediately after you walk in. Everyone including the staff was in a good mood and that always makes me feel better. Jason’s would be a great place to watch a game, with their large flat screen tv’s hanging up. If you are a Packer’s fan, this place will certainly cater to you but you will not be ostracized for wearing colors of another team. We sat at the bar so our server was one of the bartenders and she was really nice and paid good attention to us. She frequently checked in on us and showed us the chalkboard that had specials and other wing sauce flavor that are not on the menu.
This must be said. The wings are small here. I generally order 20 when I order but I have been here before so I know they are smaller than most so I ordered 25. My advice is to order at least 5 more than your usual order if you want to leave satisfied. The price is 40 cents on their wing night so at least the place doesn’t crush your wallet.
With over 10 flavors to choose from coupled with the variety of sauces, Jason’s rates well in this area. They have mild, hot, x-hot, porketta, honey mustard, bbq, butter garlic parmesan, general Tso’s orange chili, hot garlic, Jason’s Sauce, teriyaki and garlic dill ranch. Flavors for all kinds of palates can be had here.
Everything I ordered was tremendous. Noticeably better than the last time I was here and I thought they were good even then. I ordered hot, porketta, butter garlic parmesan, General Tso’s and garlic dill ranch. The hot are very similar from how The Donkey used to make them. They really bring the heat, which I thoroughly enjoy. If you like wings to be actually hot, order them. Butter garlic parmesan was good as well. All 3 flavors were represented. I would like to see some herbs thrown on them and I also wish they used actual garlic instead of garlic powder. The porketta wings are a dry rub and if you have ever had porketta, this flavor exemplifies the taste. A great idea for a flavor indeed. Finally, I had the garlic dill ranch. This flavor was not on the menu but it was written on a chalkboard on the wall. To me, this is an excellent idea for a flavor for wings. The garlic gave you that deep flavor that only garlic can do and the dill, which I normally would never touch because I dislike pickles, was used in the correct amount. Finishing the wing was the ranch, which I believe was a ranch powder, was balanced out the garlic and dill in a subtle but profound way.
