One of the only breweries in the heart of downtown Scranton, Mutant Brewing has been a frequent option for me when craving a delicious Detroit style pizza. They also make some solid burgers and tacos, but prior to our most recent visit, I have never tried the wings. Now, I can add this to their list of food they do really well. The place is located roughly one block from Courthouse square and offers outdoor seating during warmer weather and plenty of indoor seating all year long. They also host bands and other events, including recently a World Cup viewing party. The service on our visit was super quick with our orders taken promptly and the wings not taking long at all. If you plan your visit right, you can take advantage of one of their many food special nights, such as a pizza night, taco night, or burger night. And of course, as you can probably get from their name, they make some craft beer of all styles, with their sour series being a constant staple. I always have a great time at mutant, whether it’s for meeting up with friends for a drink or chowing down on some delicious food.
Wing Size: 7
Normally, they serve their wings for $14.95 for an order of 10. On Tuesdays, you can get your wings for 75 cents in orders of 5, which allows for opportunity to try a bunch of different flavors. When Serniak suggested Mutant, I was surprised because I had no idea they did wings. I’ve been there plenty of times before and never noticed it on the menu, but likely because I was so focused on the pizza. Regardless, the fact that they offer a wing night made this an easy choice. The wings are a decent size. I ordered 15 and had no problem putting them down.
Wing Flavors: 3
I think a major reason why I was surprised they offered wings is because it’s an easy-to-overlook section of their menu in the bottom left corner and they only offer 5 flavors, so it doesn’t take up much real estate. They offer three sauced wings and two dry rubs.
Wing Taste (x2): 9
While they don’t have a huge selection of wings, the wings they do offer are all delicious. The Mild Buffalo were a nice orange color with a great buttery taste, hint of vinegar, and good cayenne flavor. If you like to stick with a classic buffalo wing, you certainly cannot go wrong with these wings. The BBQ dill were pleasantly surprising. Like I said in another recent review, I tend to avoid BBQ as they aren’t my favorite flavor, but there’s wings were solid, likely because the BBQ flavor was taking a back seat to the delicious dill flavor with a hint of spice. The Garlic Parmesan were another tasty wing. This white-sauce wing blended the garlic and Parmesan perfectly to really round out the flavor. While I do wish all my wings came with more sauce, they were all well cooked and crispy.

WARNING- My review of Mutant Brewery will have a consistent amount of X-Men references throughout, most from the mid 90s cartoon. If that type of thing isn’t in your X-Genes, just focus on Lynch’s review.
Possibly the top brewery of Scranton, Mutant Brewery, kind of brings a lot of everything with its main goal of delivering quality everything. So, when it was my turn to pick the next wing place, I knew I couldn’t suppress my “gifts or talents” or whatever you want to call super abilities these days, and I got in the
KIA ForteBlackbird and headed to Scranton. It was a good day out there, so we were able to take advantage of that and sit outside. Love sitting outside, especially in a city. You get a chance to see the folks doing routine things like parallel park, get cheered for it, and not exactly appreciate it. Or you get to see Warren Worthington(Archangel) going for a casual flyover. Just whatever can happen when you’re eating outside.
The inside is a long stretch of bar and tables. I think the distance from the front to the back is shorter than it is from the elevator to Cerebro or even the Danger Room, but it’s not by much.
There is a stage towards the back because Mutant Brewing has shows there pretty consistently. So in theory, you could get some wonderful brew, a few wings, and see a band or DJ you like, pending that it’s not Mystique or Morph impersonating them. Can’t ever be too sure.
It was also Taco Tuesday when we were there. This means you can get involved with their wing night while also dipping your toe in the Deadpool of Taco Tuesday.
One of my favorite aspects of Mutant Brewing is its diversity of things to do. You can go there and drink their quality beer. You can go there and potentially see a show, as I said. You can go there and have a terrific meal. You can go there and do all of those things if you’re in the mood. But what I love is something you don’t see all the time from breweries and almost definitely not at wineries, and that’s watching sports.
I get it, not everyone cares at all about sports. I get that some love to mock sports. That’s fine. It really is. But, a ton of people love walking into a bar and seeing that any game at all is on a TV there just to have something that they can peer at, not using their optic blast, but just using their regular eyes. Mutant Brewing gets this and has several TVs behind the bar that you can watch. I think it’s really possible to have enjoyable conversation while a game is on in the background. Trust me, it’s not like an Apocalypse will occur, sports are being shown at a brewery.
Also, if you’re into USA soccer watch parties. Mutant Brewing seems to be having one for all their games, and I think that it is awesome that they are leaning into that. America just lost to Turkiye, but they are advancing. A little advice to the US from a guy who knows nothing about soccer. If you don’t want to end up being Juggernaut from X3, pull it together and focus on playing a complete game. That was soccer talk with Sern.
Our server was diligent and courteous with all our needs. It was almost like she had an Xavier-like knack of knowing what we needed even before we asked. Something to keep an eye on.
The climate at Mutant Brewing is one that is palpable. Everyone was in a good mood and looking to relax. Love when you walk into that feeling. Beats walking into the Sentinels main base.
Wing Size: 8
As I said, Tuesday is their wing night, and they go for 75 cents each. I know what you’re thinking; Genosha has better prices. But this is pretty good given the way the world operates.
And the wings are good size. I got my standard 20, and I walked away not exactly feeling like a Blob, but I did feel fulfilled.
You can get wings in orders of 5. It’s always nice when that is allowed.
Wing Flavors: 5
There are only 5 flavors to choose from at Mutant Brewing. I know, we want more. We want more flavors. I get it. But remember what the name of the establishment is. It’s not Mutant Wings or Charles Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters. It’s Mutant Brewing. They focus a bit more on their brew.
Is there room to upgrade? Of course there is. Ranch and blue cheese are available, so it’s quite possible to make hot ranch and hot blue cheese. It’s not like we’re asking them to create Weapon 12 or 15 here.
But they’ll do what they do, and I respect it.
Wing Taste (x2): 8
The wings were crisped up, for their size. No issues with that, nor were they light with the amount of sauce on any of the wings.
Let’s start off with the Cyclops(first flavor) of the wings I got, and that was mild buffalo. It was very flavorful and had enough heat to keep me engaged throughout. It wasn’t a Sun Spot level of heat, but recall I said it was mild buffalo. So maybe they were more of a Pyro level of heat. Excellent color as well.
Next, we had the Lemon Pepper. Such an underrated flavor. They’re kind of like the Gambit of wing flavors. Everyone pretty much adores them, but you don’t see enough of them. It was a dry rub, and let me tell you that they didn’t skimp on the seasoning. Every bite had lemon pepper on it. What I loved about this and the other dry run I got was that they weren’t 100% dry. There was still some residual moisture on them from coming out of the fryer. I feel that you really need that small amount of moisture. Pretty sure I can thank Ororo Munroe or Storm if that helps for that uptick in moisture.
Moving on Quicksilverly to the next dry rub, and that was Old Bay. Like the Lemon Pepper, this was loaded with seasoning. They had the assist from Storm with the moisture as well, so they were everything I needed. On a sidenote, Old Bay needs to be infused with more food items. It’s that’s good, and I don’t know why we aren’t more experimental with it. Maybe in a Days of Future Past it will be more common in food but I can only dream.
Finally, we had the garlic parmesan. Just a classic. You have a ton of garlic, and you have a ton of Parmesan cheese. You bring that together, and you have something special. Sometimes you don’t have to overthink things like Jean Grey. Sometimes, all you have to do is be like Logan from Canada and just be direct in your approach. That’s what a solid garlic parmesan is: straightforward, aggressive, and most importantly, effective.
